I first photographed a wedding at Farnham Castle in Surrey around fifteen years ago, and it's the sort of place that stays with you. Magnificent architecture, wonderfully atmospheric interiors and gardens that seem almost designed with wedding photography in mind. There's something rather lovely about two people beginning their future together in a place with so much history behind it. Of course, the castle has been standing for centuries, so it can probably cope with the occasional nervous groom or missing wedding ring! For me, the real magic has always been the people rather than the surroundings. One thing I've learnt over the years is that grand surroundings don't necessarily call for grand, serious photographs. Farnham Castle is a wonderful place to have a little fun with the camera. A sweeping staircase, an unexpected shaft of light or even a sudden gust of wind can provide the ingredients for something rather special. I enjoy encouraging couples to forget the formalities for a few minutes and simply be themselves. Sometimes the most memorable photographs happen when the plan goes slightly out of the window — and that's absolutely fine by me.

Having photographed a wedding at Farnham Castle myself, I know there's much more to this remarkable Surrey venue than its grand architecture and centuries of history. It's a place that genuinely gets my imagination working.
Its historic stone walls, atmospheric interiors and beautiful grounds provide endless photographic possibilities. I particularly enjoy the contrast between ancient architecture and modern couples who aren't afraid to do something a little different. A wonderfully dramatic portrait one minute, a completely ridiculous moment of laughter the next. Both can be equally memorable.
The changing light is another reason I enjoy photographing weddings at Farnham Castle. Soft daylight brings out the texture of the old stone, while the gardens offer opportunities for relaxed portraits away from the celebrations. Even a grey Surrey afternoon can produce something rather special when you know where to look.
Having photographed more than a thousand weddings over the years, I've learnt that the best images often happen when nobody is trying too hard.
