A wedding at the Ritz hotel London
A London landmark, and a wedding day
that feels entirely your own
The Ritz knows how to make an entrance. The doors open, the chandeliers catch the light, and for a moment even the most practical guest begins to feel they ought to have brought a better pair of shoes.
I’ve photographed many weddings here over the years. The setting is magnificent, of course, but it’s the people who make each one different: a glance across the room, a hand squeezed beneath the table, a veil that has developed its own ideas about the weather.
A wedding with a little theatre
A wedding at The Ritz has its own rhythm. There are grand rooms, thoughtful details and the happy business of bringing everyone together. Somewhere in the middle of it, someone will ask whether a chair can be moved. It can, naturally. This may then become the most carefully negotiated chair in London.
I photograph the day as it unfolds, with an editorial eye and a documentary instinct. There’s time for elegant portraits, but no need to turn the wedding into a series of appointments. The best moments often happen while everyone thinks the photographs are finished.

The Palm Court, the ballroom and the in-between moments
The Palm Court has a lovely sense of occasion, especially when afternoon tea is involved. It’s a room that encourages people to sit beautifully while keeping one eye on the cakes. I understand both impulses.
The ballroom brings a different kind of drama: a wonderful entrance, a first dance, a room filling with people who promised themselves they would only stay for one song. Then there are the quieter moments between it all—the deep breath before the ceremony, a proud look from a parent, friends finding
one another in the crowd.
Knowing when to step in—and when to disappear
Having photographed many weddings at The Ritz, I know the value of good timing. A little direction can make portraits feel natural and unhurried; knowing when to step back lets the day belong to you.
I’m always looking for the detail that makes the story yours. The flowers matter. So does the expression of the person who has just spotted the champagne. And there is nearly always one guest who knows exactly where they should be, even when the running order suggests otherwise.
